OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe twin castles of Strassoldo di Sopra and di Sotto (Upper and Lower castles) (commune of Cervignano del Friuli, Province of Udine, Italy), belong to the family of the counts of Strassoldo-Graffemberg ever since they were built more than a thousand years ago, although the relationship between the current owners dates back to 1750.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA20 years ago, in order to meet the requests of single visitors the owners of the two castles decided to work together in proposing “the days of the open doors of the castles of Strassoldo” twice a year. A few years afterwards these openings gave birth to the “the days of the open doors of the castles of Friuli-Venezia Giulia”and also financed them, during which many other castles and villas of the Region open their doors to the public.
To distiguish them the Strassoldo events are also called “In Spring: Flowers, Water and Castles” and “In Autumn: Fruit, Water and Castles” to remind the visitors that there are two castles, that the same are decorated with flowers of fruit according to the season and that they are situated in the spring water area.
2000-01-01 00.00.04-1The next edition of “In Spring: Flowers, Water and Castles” will take place on 8th and 9th April 2017 (from 9:00 to 19:00), that is on Palm  cioè il week-end della Palme.
The event is organised without any contribution or help in order to exploit this treasure trove of history of the Spring Water Area of the Friulan Lowlands and its whole surroundings.
The private halls of the castles will host excellents arts and crafts with creations made with gold, silver, copper, precious stones, paper, leather, iron, exclusive, natural and painted fabrics, wood, stone, wire, ceramics and wax: items that are difficult to find elsewhere, that are carefully selected by the owners and are ideal for an original Easter present. The gardens will host eccellent plant nurseries, who dedicate their life to research, protection and production of particular, forgotten  and rare plants. There will also be artisanal Delikatessen like iced cakes, balsamic vinegar, organic jams, ice-cream and liquorice.
There will be many other activities like small classical music concerts, conferences and guided visits to the park of the lower castle and to the other parts of the village, including the chapel of St. Maria in Vineis, with its frescoes of the 13th century.
